An impetuous writing style, rooted in the dark imagery of warfare.

None are more unfeeling than the Death Korps of Krieg. A Krieg Guardsman has no hopes, no dreams, no desires, nothing but his orders. As far as he is concerned, there is nothing left but a violent end. Now they are ordered to a mining planet named Hieronymous Theta where, after sleeping deep underground for millions of years, the Necrons are awakening. The planet is rich in minerals, a valuable resource to the Imperium, thus not to be given up easily.

Mine overseer Gunthar Soreson never considered himself to be a hero. He would rather run than fight. But when it becomes plain to see that the Planetary Defense Force is ill equipped to deal with the remorseless metal warriors and Arex, the woman he loves, is trapped within the sealed capital city, Gunthar has no choice in the matter. Gunthar will train and then fight with the Death Korps of Krieg to either rescue Arex or wipe out her killers.

**** FOUR STARS! There is an interesting mix of unemotional characters on both sides of this war. After finishing the book, I still find myself uncertain as to which is stonier, the Necrons or the Krieg Guardsmen. The author also follows a few civilians, breaking up the morbidity of endless battles in favor of showing the realistic and not always humane reactions of humans during the fallout.

Author Steve Lyons has an impetuous writing style, rooted in the dark imagery of warfare, which kept me enthralled from start to finish. ****

Not your typical Imperial Guard novel

First, a disclaimer:

In my experience, most stories regarding servicemen tend to be quite formulaic and generic. Apart from the war and battle scenes they find themselves in, the rest of the story is mainly about barracks room drama and their personality clashes and conflicts with one another, and lots of minor dramas they have with other characters on their own side, e.g with civilians, wives, spouses, superior officers, whatever. There will also be a lot of filler material dedicated to enlightening the reader about a particular character's quirks and habits, and the more self-indulgent authors may even drag these bits out into entire chapters by themselves. This seems to be the standard approach to building characters that the reader can feel and root for.

Unfortunately I find this approach utterly boring.

I don't like filler, and I don't like reading details that are in the end utterly irrelevant to the story at hand. I don't like reading about characters for their own sake. I don't like simple and uninspiring plotlines being held aloft and then lengthened by mountains of loquaciousness over every insignificant detail. I like my stories tightly written. In hindsight it isn't a surprise that my experiences with the Gaunt's Ghosts series have not been as enjoyable as I'd hoped, and left me with an aversion to picking up any novel regarding the common soldier that makes up the bulk of the Emperor's warriors.

Thus, it was with great trepidation when I finally picked up this book at the behest of a friend's recommendation.

Dead Men Walking is not your typical Imperial Guard novel. It is set in the 40k setting and it has familiar factions involved - Death Korps Imperial Guard versus Necrons - but the main characters in this story aren't of any Guardsmen. Instead we are given a view of how events unfold through the eyes and experiences of a cast of mainly civilians and non-combatants caught in between the Necrons and their supposed saviours, the Death Korps of Krieg.

Thus, readers expecting a Guard novel centering around the lives, exploits and heroics of Imperial Guardsmen may find themselves disappointed with the story paying more attention to the perspectives of non-combatant characters. I think that for this reason alone many readers may not be able to enjoy this book as it does not conform to their expectations.

Dead Men Walking is not without its action scenes and gripping accounts of heroics. The plot progresses very smoothly and there is a very steady escalation of threat and direness of the situations the characters find themselves in. The characters fight well against the Necrons, in the ways they are able. The characters are taxed beyond their limits by the circumstances they find themselves in, and yet for all that, this isn't a story with a happy ending.

This story has one of the most intense endings that I have ever read. Most other stories have epilogues and endings just to tie up loose ends and place simple and easy closures on plotlines already ended a chapter or two back. The ending in Dead Men Walking is gripping, tense, and eminently memorable, but you would only feel that as well if you had the patience to follow the characters from the beginning of the story to its end. This is a story that closes with a bang.

If I had to sum up what Dead Men Walking is about in one paragraph, I would say that this isn't so much a tale of heroism or of humanity's indomitable spirit against overwhelming odds, but one of human frailty and limits. Because of this, and because it is well written, it is one of the better books in the Black Library catalogue for the additional depth it gives to the 40k universe.

good effort but...

Good effort by the author in trying to put the inhumane and stoic guardsmen of the death korps in a very human conflict against a terrifying and alien enemy. unfortunately as the story progresses the death korps becomes the background instead of the main subject. As expected of a imperial guard novel the reader expected more action and focus on the death korps troopers...but the beleaguered planets PDF received as much attention as the guardsmen.

A nice, visual collection of the Usual Suspects

My German cookbook shelf is, I admit, rather extensive. In addition to buying just about every reasonable option I could find, I've taken to buying German cookbooks in the native language -- especially if they're for things I know perfectly well I'll never make. (I have a traditional pastries book that's a case in point, but I like _imagining_ I'll bake them.) So I was a bit surprised to find this cookbook at my local library: wow, a book I don't own! It's very nice indeed, though not a must-have -- at least not for me.

The cookbook promises to be, basically, Grandma's home cookin' -- and that's what you get. There's no attempt towards modernity, or variations on traditional dishes (the biggest exception I can find is beef roulades with hard-boiled eggs inside instead of dill pickles). That's perfectly fine, if you're looking for a good basic collection of German food -- accompanied by attractive photos, since this _is_ a DK publication.

The cookbook is organized by type of meal: soups and stews; everyday meals; Sunday dinners; sweet main courses and desserts; cakes and cookies; jams, jellies, and preserves. I found most of the "usual" dishes among the hundred-or-so included here, such as green bean, pear, and bacon stew; stuffed peppers; Rhine saurbraten with potato dumplings; goulash. And a few that we rarely see here in a German restaurant but are common in Germany: cheese spätzle; mushroom goulash with bread dumplings, maultaschen (Germany's answer to ravioli).

If you have a German grandma (or wish you did) you'll find the recipes themselves comfortably satisfying. They may not be EXACTLY how you remember it (as the maultaschen recipe headnote comments, "There's only one true recipe for Swabian meat-filled pasta pouches -- and each family has a different one") but I'm sure you'll like it.

Frankly at this point I have enough German cookbooks that I don't feel the need add another Basics to my set. But if I were shopping for a good starter cookbook to give to a friend, I easily could choose this one. You'll probably be very happy with it.

Fantastic

These are the recipes I ate growing up in a German Canadian community. The book is fun to read and the recipes are varied and delicious (so far). Cooked the Weiner Goulash recipe tonight and we wanted to drink the sauce out of the dutch oven - it was so good. Not particularly gourmet or light in style (did you expect "lite" German food?) but everything is made from scratch, directions are clear and there are wonderful photos and stories accompanying the recipes. My only complaint is the index seems to list dishes, alphabetically by title only. Still, I give this 5 stars because it's such delightful cookbook and I've yet to see anything else resembling it on the market. I'm so happy these two authors collaborated and created this cookbook.

A special gift of authentic, often heirloom, German recipes

If you are looking for a German cookbook, this might be just what you're looking for. There are a lot of authentic, traditional recipes--NOT Americanized. Some of the recipes are from three, four generations back. There are all the German recipes you expect, plus many that you may not be familiar with. There are some old-time techniques also, and that makes for some very interesting times in the kitchen. These are old-time gourmet recipes, NOT new and innovative takes on traditional German food.

Besides the authors sharing so many old and very authentic recipes, here are some things I liked about the cookbook: Great pictures of every recipe, very vibrant colors; information on where the recipes originated; interesting stories associated with many of the recipes; most everything is "from scratch" (you won't see any canned goods in the ingredient lists, except maybe a store-bought fresh pasta or bouillon cubes here or there), and I really appreciated the terrific (though few) fruit and veggie jams, butters and pickles.

What I didn't like and why I knocked it down a star: It has a very poor index--such a shame. Also, the authors' writing is a bit "home-grown" and in no way sophisticated.

I'm still very happy to have this book in my collection. The old recipes are very special, and I greatly appreciate the authors sharing them.

A satisfying complete work beautifully written and presented.

I have just put down what will be a classic and required reading in anthropology departments. 'Unbound' is more: it is a highly readable, believable history of how Man became what s/he is. It's a big book, and getting five million years into some 400+ pages must have been a Herculean task of editing for Currier. I read it almost at a sitting. Rarely can one call a work of non-fiction a page-turner, but this one is. And having been a Professor of Anthropology or actively involved in practical anthropology all my working life, and looking for the faults and what's missing, I am surprised to say at no point did I stop and note 'this is wrong' or 'he missed out ~'. This is one of those satisfying complete works that will appeal equally to the academic and the educated 'man in the street'. The structure is more than clever, it is original: with inventions leading up to language, the point at which most assessments of modern man begin. The reader will get some new viewpoints on early development ~ bipedalism and the invention of the spear stand out~ and, most importantly, how the bits go together to make evolution. The title is as brilliant as the 'binding' into various parts for ease of reference. Read Darwin, then read Currier. We are going to hear much of this book.

Dr. Currier's highly accessible work is alive with the energy of discovery. Synthesizing insights from paleontology, primatology, cultural anthropology, and related sciences it surprises and challenges accepted narratives of human evolution. In the process, it not only conveys a new understanding of our profound and ancient connections; it also illuminates key facets of modern society. Highly recommended for all serious students of human culture and the humanities--and for any reader who wants a greater sense of place at a time when understanding how we function as a species has never been more urgently needed.

Amazing Read!

Loving to read a good book of any kind, I so often find that reading non-fiction can be a tedious labor, with the book's author approaching a single subject from a hundred different angles, to create a book from what could have been discussed in a chapter. Not so with Unbound! With ten chapters, eight technologies and five million years of history on earth as a subject matter, this book is as enjoyable to read as it is full of information on the evolution of humanity and technology from pre-history until today.

I will tell you right up front, I know Richard Currier, the author, and I was one of the people he trusted with reading Unbound in its very early stages. So I had the opportunity to read a draft of the manuscript awhile ago, but only piecemeal and not necessarily in the correct order of chapters or copy. Even at that, it read well and I was looking forward to getting the book. Having recently received my pre-ordered copy from Amazon, I had the opportunity to read the the book in its entirety. Wow! I was hooked from the introduction, but found that as reading the chapters progressed, I didn't want to put the book down. I love when that happens! By the end of chapter ten, I was sorry I had gone through it so fast... I didn't want it to end.

I am sure that people with deep interest in anthropology, paleontology, technology, history and early history are going to gravitate to Unbound. I see the book has received praise from professors and professionals in those fields. As a lover of learning, I enjoyed the opportunity to gain more knowledge on those subjects.

The book is written in the style of a storyteller, not a technician, making it a great read for all.
