very enjoyable

It's a very short, fast, fun way to remember all 44 presidents. It also adds additional info about different presidents not just the order they held office. Right after I was done reading I could write down all presidents in order and able to answer trivia questions about each. I'm a big fan of Kevin Horsley's methods

About the Author
Dr. Duane Hanselman earned his Ph.D. And MSEE from the University of Illinois. He earned his BSEE from Michigan State University. Currently an Associate Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Maine, Dr. Hanselman has taught a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate classes including introductory circuits, signals and linear systems, control systems, signal processing, electromagnetics, power electronics, electromechanical energy conversion, and numerical methods.

Dr. Hanselman is a leading expert in the design of brushless permanent magnet motors, i.e., brushless DC motors and PM synchronous motors. He provides consulting to a wide variety of companies and has served as an expert witness for patent infringement lawsuits and various insurance and civil suits. In addition, Dr. Hanselman has presented numerous short courses on the design of brushless permanent magnet motors.

Dr. Hanselman has published numerous books, including the Mastering MATLAB series of texts and two editions of Brushless Permanent Magnet Motor Design.

Good general Matlab reference

I have been using a copy of this reference since I got started with Matlab about a year and a half ago. It is very good for beginners who need to look up how to do general tasks such as write a function using variable arguments, perform plotting, or figure out how to shoe-horn a problem into Matlab that doesn't really seem to fit the Matlab paradigm of everything being a matrix. I also particularly like the chapter on using Matlab with Java. Of course, if you are a more advanced user, this book will seem too simplistic. Even now, though, it's the first book I go to when I have a question that does not involve one of the specialized Matlab toolboxes. The table of contents is not shown by Amazon, so I show it here for the purpose of completeness:

I am going to also write a review on "Matlab Guide", I will be also comparing the two books in the reviews.
If you are considering Matlab as a scientific computing language - look no more. It has licensened the "Maple Kernal" as part of its "Math Symbolic ToolBox", it uses LAPAK from FORTRAN for the algorithms for Matrix operations; it uses a high level language (very C++ like) and its own consise syntax for matrix manipulations as well as "Handle Graphics" to produce impressive looking plots and reports. In otherwords, it combines the best of various approaches. If you do not know C++, I advise that learn that first before attempting to learn Matlab.
Comparing "Mastering Matlab 6" (MM6) to "Matlab Guide" (MG):
*Both books are NOT for absolute Beginners, I think the assumption is that you will first study the book that comes with Matlab and the supurb "Help" Documentation that comes with the program. There are also good starting out tutorials on the net - search: "Matlab; Tutorial". The US Navy has a consise tutorial to get you started.
*MM6 does a better job on teaching to the next level beyond the Mathworks supplied documentation and beggining Tutorials.
*MM6 WINS HANDSDOWN ON TEACHING version new to 6.0 specific features. You are short changing yourself by going for a 5.0 text.
*MM6 is geared more towards a programmer/scientist/engineer; whereas, MG is geared to a mathematician. MM6 is comprehensive (800 pages!), but well organized that you can branch off to a given chapter without covering all prior chapters. Because I had a problem to solve, I started on Chapter 18, "Interpolation" without any problems. If you have no immediate issue - taking the book in order is advised. BUT THE BOOK IS WELL CROSS-REFERENCED THAT you can jump ahead to a topc of interest.
**MM6 is real modern: There are 4 chapters (out of 28) that delve into the Object Oriented aspects of Matlab, interfacing to C or Fortran, Extending Matlab with Java and integrating Matlab with Windows using Active X. 7 Chapters are devoted to Graphics, Interface, Movies. 9 Chapters are devoted to Topics that a modern Scientist or Engineer would need to know to take advantage of Matlab: ODEs, Optimization, Fourier Analysis. MM6 covers the topics in detail. Other chapters really get down to the nitty gritty of the Matlab programming language.
I believe that MM6 is ideal for an Engineer/Scientist who is looking for a book to take him or her from the Apprentice to a Journeyman level in Matlab. Beyond that, the books would have to become more specialty (Chem E, Controls,...) orientated. This will get you to the plane where you can then focus on your specialty.

MatLab programming

I use this book everyday. It is easy to find what you need right away. Although, MatLab has demos that you can use to write programs or m-scripts, the book has features that are not in the demos that will make writing scripts much easier. It doesn't go into great detail with more difficult plots but allows for the those who just need 1-D, 2-D and simple 3-D plots to plot data points easily and fast. This is definitely the bible for first time users of MatLab.

Fun read, but not on its' own.

I hate to say it, but this is not one of my favorite Shalvis series (Animal Magnetism for the win there). The pace is steady, the characters are interesting, but despite starting at the beginning of this series, I feel like I got dropped in the middle! The book and the series are enjoyable thus far, but unlike Shalvis' other series, you do NOT want to try this as a stand alone - the characters are too interdependent.

My Kind of Wonderful, 4.5 stars!

For some reason, this is actually the first book I’ve read written by Jill Shalvis. Some of my book friends adore her writing, and I finally understand why. Going in, I didn’t know what to expect, but this book pleasantly surprised me. It’s a sweet book, without too much angst and over-the-top situations, just how I need my reads every now-and-then.

“For the first time she’d been the highest point, and everything below her—the world—was at her feet. And as someone who until very recently had never been in control of her own destiny, it staggered her. In a really great way.”

Bailey Moore has just been given a second lease on life, after having battled cancer for ten years, she has finally been declared cancer-free by the doctors. Living with a deathly decease for so long has impacted her life and that of her loved ones hugely. She never had a chance to act like a normal teenager, to be carefree and to enjoy life to the fullest. Her now ex-boyfriend and her mother know how sick she has been, still treating her like a fragile little girl, even after she is declared healthy. Being done with their smothering behavior, Bailey plans a list of things she wants to do to reclaim her life and celebrate it. Her list and her artistic job leads her to a ski resort in Cedar Ridge, where she meets Hudson who awakens feelings in her she has always dreamed about.

“Hudson. She couldn’t tell for sure of course, but the set to his shoulders reminded her of him. And then there was the way her heart started pounding. She had no idea what this odd hyper-awareness of him meant, but she was hoping it was nothing but simple orgasm withdrawal.”

Hudson ‘Hud’ Kincaid is a hardworking man, together with his half-siblings he is managing the family ski resort in Cedar Ridge. It’s a lot of work, hard work, since their father’s mismanagement drove the place almost to the ground. Hud doesn’t mind the long hours and all the labor, since this means working with his siblings he cares deeply for, and he can support his mother. Growing up with a mother who frequently checked out of reality, and a father who didn’t want his second family, Hud and his twin brother Jacob didn’t have an easy childhood. Their luck changes when their father’s wife takes the three of them under her wings, giving the twins and their mother a place to stay. Having his work and the care of his mother, Hud doesn’t have the time for a serious relationship, his plate is full as it is. Meeting Bailey makes him want to have more for the first time in years.

“Her smile was unguarded, easy. Contagious. And then there was her gaze, deep enough for a man to drown in. And in that single heartbeat, he felt the same urge he’d felt the first time he’d seen her. The urge to pull her in and stare into those eyes. They had something, he thought. An inexplicable chemistry.”

When Hud and Bailey meet on a mountaintop in Cedar Ridge, the two immediately feel something. They feel drawn to each other, but both have their own reasons not to pursue those feelings. What they do agree on is something casual, just sex and spending time together while Bailey is working at the ski resort. Of course, this no-strings relationship is destined to fail, both Hud and Bailey feel much more then they have agreed upon. Assumptions from both Hud and Bailey stops the couple from truly communicating, leading the way to heartbreak. Fortunately, Hud and Bailey both come separately to the conclusion they have to give their relationship a real chance.

Not having read the previous book in the series, Second Change Summer, this didn’t took anything away from me enjoying this book. Yes, the leading characters from the previous book appeared, but I didn’t feel like I was missing important information. Hud and Bailey are both real people with their own history, with real questions and feelings concerning their ‘fling’. I love how Bailey jumps into her new, cancer free life, doing the things she always wanted to do. I adore Hud for taking care of his ill, but funny mother, but I felt so sorry for him for not be able to fix things with his estranged twin brother. I also loved that both Hud and Bailey realized the mistake they were making, and were trying to make things right at the same time.

“She stared at him for a long time and he waited, trusting her to come to the same conclusion, that together they could face anything. “I signed up for the duration,” he said. “For the good, the bad, the ugly, everything. I’m in this, all the way in, Bailey. The question is, are you?”

I adore the sweet story of Hud and Bailey, a tale without over-the-top moments, crazy exes, and too much angst. I will definitely buy the previous book, and I can’t wait for the next addition in this series.

I give My kind of Wonderful 4.5 stars.

A big disappointment

What happened to Jill Shalvis? Did she write the books in this Cedar Ridge series? They all seem to be carbon copies of whatever book came before. The characters have no depth: All the heroes in the series are the same - macho but sensitive. All the heroines in the series are the same - weak and pathetic - falling immediately in love - or more accurately, in sex - with the hero. There is none of the detail that she provided in the Lucky Harbor series - no quirky side characters or background about the setting. Books like this are always light reading but this isn't fun light reading - it's boring and hard to wade through because nothing happens. Jill - read your Lucky Harbor books and figure out if you still want to write or just make money from readers who expect better of you and fall into the trap of reading these formula books.

Worth the purchase

Recommended for an Undergrad Epi course and glad I bought it. I still definitely had to go through the assigned text but this was a nice supplement. In some areas it was easier/more concise and in other areas it was way more detailed. If you are getting this thinking you'd be able to skip reading an assigned text, I doubt that this would be a good choice - but then Epidemiology is fun anyways, why would you do that? But if you're looking to supplement or another way of explaining the same topic in not so many words this might be a good choice.

Inadequate for board exam prep, but good reading for specific audiences

Used this along with the Mayo Clinic Preventive Medicine and Public Health Board Review (Mayo Clinic Scientific Press)Preventive Medicine & Public Health: PreTest Self-Assessment and Review to prepare for the Preventive Medicine Certification Board exam (Core & Public Health/ General Preventive Medicine) this year.

The strength of this book lies in the biostatistics and epidemiology sections - they are well written. Rather than giving you several formulae to memorize, they encourage you to form an intuitive understanding of the concepts, which I prefer.

The questions in these sections are also good in that they force you to acquire a thorough understanding of those concepts.

I also appreciate the spirit of this book - it is one of the few to explain "what preventive medicine is" and is written by authors who clearly love what they do. In fact, on the spectrum of reference textbooks read by self-confessed nerds like me, it's actually fairly interesting. If I'd read this as a student or intern, I'd have gained valuable knowledge and perspective on the field of preventive medicine prior to my MPH. Reading it makes me proud of being a practitioner of preventive medicine.

That being said, in terms of nuts and bolts preparation for the board exam, this book is quite inadequate. While the biostats/epi sections are fairly decent, you'll absolutely need another text for studying occupational medicine and environmental medicine, and you'll need to go to the USPSTF and CDC website to look up chronic disease guidelines, screening recommendations, and immunization schedules. (The Mayo text is better on these sections). It's also not a book you want to cram with a month before the exam - it's detailed, wordy, a bit rambling, and the tables and figures are not very helpful. However, the questions at the end are useful preparation for the board exam.

I would recommend this, however, as a book for third year medical students or new interns/residents looking to round out their education and master concepts of biostats/epi. It's also a good book for PM practitioners to display on their bookshelf.

Excellence in Biostatistics

I have used the 2nd edition but the 3rd edition
is superior. The 3rd edtion has a complete
medical glossary, classical mathematIcal examples
are transfered from the 2nd edition, and at the
end of each chapter, there is a short test on the
material. No question, there are areas where
the authors, or publishers, could have been
clearer but overall, most readers will
benefit from the examples. Readers in Biostatistics and Epidemiology know these
subjects can be difficult to write about, but
I found this edition reader friendly.Is it perfect? No, but for the intermediate reader,
it fufills the need to master complex subjects.
One of the sources for this book is the
"Basic and Clinical Biostatistics", 4th, edition,
2004, Dawson, B., etc. This book received
mixed reviews from readers. I think most
readers will be satisfied with Jekel's book.A
major advantage to this text is the clear explanations of major subjects like sensitivity,
specificity, and odds ratios. Readers will be
deighted with this clear writing.

About the Author
Nihal Kularatna is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. From 1986 to 2000 he developed a research and development base at the Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies in Sri Lanka where he was a Principal Research Engineer and subsequently CEO (2000-2001). He has published over 50 papers and is the author of three books. He is a Fellow of the IET.

Beautiful book for all ages

I originally picked this book up for my four year old grand daughter as a book we could read together and realized how wonderful this book is. It is a great book for everyone to read young and old alike. Bonus you get extra books as well.
I think all of us at any age should go and read some of the books from our youth and maybe like Luna, The NIght Butterfly find a New book that I wish I had 50 something years ago and start a new tradition to pass forward, Beautiful book writing and pictures. Must have for all ages

a lesson about being different

Luna feels differently than the rest in her butterfly family. She comes out at night and once streaks of daylight come out, she gets tired and isn’t out with the rest of the butterflies.

She’s not sure why she’s so different. It takes a visit with a wise owl to for Luna to learn who she is and why she’s different.

Great book covers some useful utilities

I found this book to be a very strong coverage of many tools, while not all may be applicable for your tasks it covers enough of them to be useful. It covers multiple different tools of the same type, and many different types to help you development and build process be more productive.

If you need to get up to speed real quick on what is out there this is a great book to start with.

Brilliant, used it twice at work, within the first couple of days (Ant scripting and SchemaSpy). The information it contains is current, relevant and concise. Like the approach it takes to linking all the different tools into a full development cycle, haven't worked through this yet, but looks very powerful.

Great Book - but could definitely remove some sections

Definitely focused more towards beginner Java users (competent/advanced users will have already discovered the majority of what is covered in the text), this is a wonderful, quick examination and look into the world of each tool covered. It's thorough enough to get you started and get your brain wrapped around some of the common tools used by everyone out there. However, it is not overkill. You are pointed in the proper directions for more detailed information on things covered.

However, this book isn't necessarily "Java" power tools. The book covers various topics in SDLC including CI options, VCS options, etc. all of which could be removed to cover more "power tools" that are specific to Java (i.e. Jakarta Commons, etc.).

So, while it contains some good information, I just cannot go over 3 stars due to the fact that moves in-and-out of the Java realm frequently. Sure, the topics covered relate to some of the tools, but it's out of focus to explain here. Typos are frequent, but mostly just little things and you won't get thrown off by them.

The book should really have been focused less on VCS, CI, etc. and more on the other common libraries/tools that you see out there used exclusively with Java.
