About the Author

Wil van der Aalst is a full professor at the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science of the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e), The Netherlands, where he chairs the Architecture of Information Systems (AIS) group and serves as the scientific director of the Data Science Center Eindhoven. He also has a part-time appointment in the BPM group of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Australia. His research and teaching interests include information systems, business process management, process modeling, Petri nets, process mining, and simulation.

Wil has published more than 180 journal papers, 19 books, 425 refereed conference or workshop publications, and 60 book chapters. Many of his papers are highly cited (he has a H-index of more than 123 according to Google Scholar, the highest among all European computer scientists) and his ideas on process support have influenced researchers, software developers, and standardization committees worldwide.

About the Author
Chic Thompson’s passion is inspiring executives, MBA students and children to be “curious first… critical second” while creative problem solving. Daniel Ventre is an engineer for CNRS, a researcher for CESDIP (Centre de recherches sociologiques sur le droit et les institutions pénales), and in charge of courses at Télécom ParisTech and at the ESSEC Business School. He is the author of a number of articles and works, in France and abroad, on the themes of cyberwar, information warfare, cyberconflict, cybersecurity and cyberdefense.

howler of a wrong claim

Ventre looks at the national policies for information warfare for the US, China, Japan, India, Russia and, some surprisingly perhaps, Singapore. For each nation, he summarises position papers put out by the government, and supplies some analysis and reactions. The most interesting might be for China. We see how China has taken an increasingly confident role in devising strategies and tactics that integrate information warfare techniques with their traditional military. This has been perceived by US analysts as directed against the US in a possible future conflict. All this is given against the backdrop of the 1st Gulf War, where the US military overcame a large Iraqi army in no small part by decisive advantages in the use of information on the battlefield. China took note of the American methods, and realised that it needed to modernise its defense apparatus.

Unfortunately the book is marred by a spectacular howler. In the second page of the first chapter, it quotes from a 1994 book by Schwartau, Information Warfare: Second Edition, "The United States is the target of economic and industrial espionage ... from Japan (which has almost destroyed the American information technology industry in Silicon Valley)" ??? Say what?? That claim was so amazingly wrong, both at the time and now, 15 years later. Silicon Valley would grow amazingly in the 90s, during the dot com boom. The entire dot com boom was started with the invention of the Web and the browser, in 1991-2. Innovations spewed out of Silicon Valley that epitomised the Web. The free browsers. The online auctions (nee. eBay), online bookstores (Amazon), online payments (Paypal), search engines (Yahoo, Google). None of these were Japanese. With the benefit of hindsight, Schwartau's claim was starkly wrong.

But even in 1994, his claim was questionable. At the time, Japan was several years into a recession that started in 1989. Its IT companies took heavy losses, as did US companies like IBM in the early 90s. Finally, An Innovative Look at Innovation!

"Innovate the Future" provides business leaders with a clear and concise overview of the evolution of innovation and how to create structure within their organizations to support it. It is one thing to talk about innovation within a business context; it is quite another matter to implement innovation in a meaningful way. David Croslin has created a road map of how to actually achieve the objective.

He distinguishes innovation from invention and provides clarity with respect to what he calls the "Innovation Lifecycle." He then breaks down the wide variety of innovation strategies that are available to companies; how they fit; and what structure needs to be in place to foster their success.

As a turnaround expert and organizational behaviorist, I can tell you that "Innovate the Future" is right on point when it comes to describing the thought process and steps that that are required to make innovation a reality within your organization rather than just a superficial goal. Great book about business innovation

This book has a unique way of discussing innovation. It lays out the basics between invention and innovation, does a deep dive study and then uses real use cases to apply it. No matter what you knew about innovation before, you will learn a lot from each chapter.

It is obvious that the author came from a real-world, business background, not an academic one. He converts innovation theory into practice and applies it to our daily business lives with many of his great examples. He has a suspenseful writing style that keeps your eyes on the book until you finish it.

This book is a great companion for travel time in the airplane. Priced very well (below 20$) makes it way worth the money and time. I think it can inspire anyone, from the small business owner to the Fortune 500 CEO. In today's global economy, innovation is the only way forward and this book provides the roadmap. I hope you will enjoy it as I did.

I think this book is essential for businesses, entrepreneurs and investors

If you are interested in the future you should buy this book. Innovation is no longer a luxury for the few but a necessity for all. This book is especially important for young people (and those young at heart) so they can translate their ideas into inventions and any invention into a successful innovation. David Croslin tells you how you could do this. Making money or making your mark is no magic. What's required is an understanding of where you are today and where you would like to be tomorrow, and David Croslin provides you the road map. He has an engaging style and a wealth of experience and knowledge which he generously shares so you too can be a successful entrepreneur, innovator, investor, banker or policymaker. This book opened new vistas for me, and can for you as well.

Purpose of the book: separate you from your money???

As far as I can tell the prupose of this book is to separate you from a great deal of your money!

It has a great deal to say about nothing. There is very little substantive detail on anything! Which, given it's size, really is quite amazing! This book will not teach you how to concretely implement any decision support system. It waffles on at a very distant level about such systems but never gets down in the trenches, if you know what I mean. It's basically why (though only just) rather than how! And for me, that makes this book a very pricey door jam.

Seriously, I was really underwhelmed and disappointed by the book. I ended up buying Statistics, Data Analysis and Decision Modeling by Evens and Olson (isbn: 0130783838) to find the information and practice that I need (decision modeling rather than decision support systems per se). It also comes with phstat software which is a VERY useful excel statistical add-in.

For example, from this book, p681-685 is genetic algorithms -> in 5 Pages!!!!! with nothing substantive about recombination, crossover, mutation, fitness or anythign like that (the terms are mentioned but not explained)...all it does is refer you sompleace else! Fuzzy logic gets 4 pages...with no implementation details. That is seriously ordinary!

So I suggest you save your money and look at something else. SOmehow I don't see this book giving anybody too much joy. It amazes me it has lasted through 7 edition. If the 7th is this bad...I'd hate to see the first edition!!! So, as I said before, more a book about why and where to go to get knowledge of how to do rather than giving you the know-how. SO look for a book on how! This is a book for discovering that terms like knowledge discovery in databases (KDD) actually exist...and maybe what it means (like say webopedia) but certainly not how to do it...

This book contains many empty references to other works, which indicate that the author(s) are well read, but does not help the reader at all (how many books does the author expect you to buy?). A lot of writing on each page, but little actual information. If you are looking for a book on how to actually implement a DSS, look elsewhere.
